„Do not give fish to the hungry, teach them how to catch it themselves….”

(Oriental proverb)

Following the teachings of the abovementioned proverb, I conceived and realized DEDALan educational toys program for children of 7-12 years old. The project is meant to be appliedespecially in schools. By means of its diversified offer, it will assist teachers in following the guidelines of the curricula, at the same time that they actively develop the children's intellectual abilities.

The program's purpose is that of intellectually stimulating the childrentheir creative spirit, organizational skills and manufacturing abilitiesby means of provoking them to gain knowledge and actively explore, through intuition, the qualities of materials and the workings of physical phenomena. This goal will be achieved by means of games and active participation in simulated production processes, thus awakening within the children the willingness to create.

The instructions manual that accompanies each product comes to the assistance of the child. The manual is created to assist the child in producing and better understanding the toy at the same time that he/she acquires a precise and correct means of communicationthe technical drawing and the geometric symbolic. In parallel, the child will also make progress in gaining more understanding of the man-made material world surrounding him/her.

So far, several products within DEDAL have successfully passed the experimental phase in 5 schools of Cluj county.

The name of the program, its logo and several of its components (the PANDA and VECTOR airplanes), have already been recognized and protected by OSIM.

The materials used for the production of these toys are cardboard and wood, materials that are both low-cost and ecological at the same time.

DEDAL is an “open-ended" program, that can incorporate new products and ideas, but always within the principles and guidelines described above.

The inspiration for the idea to develop such a program originated in my reaction to the commonly encountered state of “numbness” of the spirit, of waiting for someone else to give, to “do something,” tendencies that have already influenced the mentality of many people around us.

The program is innovative in that it makes use of simple and elegant formal and technological solutions. These characteristics are combined both in the process of product invention, as well as in the of production and target of the programmobilizing the child's recreational resources and thus awakening and perpetuating within him/her the wish to learn.
